Los Cristianos with its harbor and beautiful light sand beaches
Tenerife Los Cristianos is a popular place for tourists in the southwest of Tenerife with a light sand beach and a harbor for whale watching tours. Los Cristianos is located in a relatively protected bay between Mount Guaza in the south and the smaller volcanic mountain cone of Monte Chayofita. The place was first mentioned in the 16th century by the port. He belongs to the municipality of Arona.
Until 1965 it was an insignificant small fishing village which then gained importance due to the emerging tourism. Coming from the north airport (TFN) one reached Tenerife Los Cristianos at the time via a small country road and the journey took 5 to 6 hours with the bus. Only the construction of the TF1 motorway and the construction of the southern airport in 1978 enabled the current influx of around 5.7 million guests in 2017.
In the meantime, the two most famous holiday resorts in the south, Los Cristianos and Playa de las Americas, have almost grown together. Nevertheless, very different.
Tenerife Los Cristianos is still the quieter and original place and very much characterized by the port and the beautiful white sand beaches. In the many small streets there are a variety of shops, bars, restaurants and shops. At the large harbor mole there is also the berth and departure point for the ferries to the western islands of La Gomera, La Palma and El Hierro.
Beach and Harbour of Los Cristianos
The sea off Los Cristianos is known for whales and dolphins
Tourists and locals enjoy life under the many shade trees on the promenade. Bathing lovers will get their money’s worth on the very well-kept sandy beaches. The waves breaking in front of the beaches make bathing there very safe and also suitable for small children. The beach is only separated from the many restaurants with some very good fish specialties by the promenade.
Whale and dolphin tours are currently very popular and there is almost always contact with the whales. However, the boats have to keep a distance of 200m in order not to bother the animals. A large population of whales, mostly pilot whales, live permanently in the waters off Los Cristianos because they have a constantly growing food supply there. The whales live in groups of mostly 5 – 7 larger animals and the whale children are always in the middle of the group. Often one also comes across a dolphin school with sometimes 20 animals romping around the boat. There are also sailing trips, deep sea fishing and glass bottom trips to discover the underwater world from the port of Tenerife Los Cristianos.

Chayofa is located above Los Cristianos
It is planned to relocate the ferry port from Los Cristianos to Fonsalia near Playa San Juan. The expressway there was completed in 2018. The relocation would relieve the site of traffic a lot and the current port would then only be used for excursion boats and as a marina.
Above “Tenerife Los Cristianos” lies the popular town of Chayofa, also known as the garden city. The place is characterized by its quiet location outside of mass tourism. There are several restaurants and a tapa bar in the village. The restaurant “Meson La Finca Chayofa” is very popular. The specialty are table grills where you can grill your delicacies yourself. From Chayofa one is in a few minutes by car in the action and on the beaches of Los Cristianos.
From the harbor promenade you can see directly to Palm Mar. The place has developed enormously into a popular residential area in recent years.
